A dead Fisher to reboot Star Wars? Abrams justifies

CHICAGO: The upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker is the ninth and final space-centric theatrical film of the franchise directed by JJ Abrams.

Abrams told a gathering at Star Wars Celebration 2019 in Chicago on Friday before releasing the teaser-trailer, "This movie is about this new generation, what they have inherited, the light and the dark, and are they ready?"

He told Reuters that the goal was to create something that gives a sense of surprise and thrill and heartbeat and shock and awe," and also a feeling of inevitability.

Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) returns in this last film despite Carrie Fisher's death after the shooting for the trilogy's most recent film, the Last Jedi. How? Abrams says he put together old leftover, unused footages for a sequence in the new story.

"Leia lives in this film in a way that is kind of mind-blowing to me," Abrams said.

Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd will reprise her role as Lieutenant Connix in the new film. She will be seen with her late mother! She had played roles with her late mother in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi as well.

Abrams said, "The crazy thing is, and I say this emotionally, every day it hits me that she's not here. But it is so surreal because we are working with her still... Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is kind of mind-blowing to me."

"With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, (and brother Todd Fisher!) we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII,” Abrams said. Does it justify?

The teaser-trailer also shows a hug between Princess Leia (Carrie Fischer) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). And the return of emperor Palpatine.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
