Apple unveils streaming service TV Plus, new TV App

March 26, 2019
Steve Jobs Theater (California): Apple has broken into the streaming business. "As you can tell, today is going to be a very different kind of event,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said, kicking off TV Plus, the video streaming service.

An advanced TV App was also announced at Steve Jobs Theater on Monday as part of the new suite of services that includes Apple TV Channels. The Steve Jobs Theater is at Cupertino in California.

The new streaming platform features original shows, movies and documentaries. It is backed up by Hollywood artists like Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon. The price is likely $9.99 a month for TV Plus.

The company said Apple TV Plus will become “the new home for the world’s most creative storytellers featuring exclusive original shows, movies and documentaries.”

The announcement featured Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and the stars.

Spielberg said that he will resurrect the 93-year-old Amazing Stories brand for Apple TV Plus. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell discussed another venture, The Morning Show.

With a $2b investment, Apple plans to take on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and others.

To be launched in about 100 countries, Apple's TV Plus will be ad-free.

The company also announced Apple TV Channels, which will let customers pay for HBO, Showtime, Starz and CBS.

"We designed a new TV experience where you can pay for only the channels you want, all in one app, with the password you already have. Watch everything on demand and ad-free. Download your shows to take with you anywhere. Enjoy the highest quality picture and sound available. No more bouncing around from app to app,” Apple’s Peter Stern said.

However, Netflix is not backing the new TV app. But Amazon and Hulu will allow their content to be watched within the Apple TV app.

Apple TV is a little black box that plugs into a TV. The Apple TV's main mission is to act as a media streamer. It connects to your TV using an HDMI cable and requires a connection to your Wi-Fi network, or an Ethernet connection to your router.
