Earthquake hits Assam, no reports of casualties | An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale hit the north- north west regions of Guwahati in Assam
on Monday at around 2.23 p.m. According to the initial reports Bhutan capital
Thimphu was the epicentre of the quake. There were no reports of casualties, but
it was reported that several buildings in Guwahati had developed cracks due to
the earthquake. This is the fifth time an earthquake has hit the northeast region
of India within a month's time Earlier, on September 4, north-eastern India witnessed
a moderate earthquake measuring 5.9,centered 96 km east-southeast of Imphal, Manipur.
The quake lasted for around 20 seconds; its after-shocks were felt for over two
minutes. Two moderate intensity quakes, one measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale
and another measuring 4.9 had shook the region on August 12 and 19. Another measuring
5.3 was recorded on August 31. |
