Navi Mumbai polls: Police arrest 15 after NCP, Congress activists clash | Navi Mumbai Police cracked down on activists of the
Congress party and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Sunday after both sides clashed with each other during area municipal corporation polls. Both NCP and
Congress activists alleged that bogus voting had taken place during the polls.
Navi Mumbai Police said that at least 15 persons had been arrested for rioting
after the clash in the Sanpada area. On Saturday, the NCP expressed confidence
about winning the municipal corporation polls. The Navi Mumbai municipal corporation
is the third largest civic body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Apart from
the NCP, the Congress, its ally in the state and the Centre, is also contesting
the polls. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is also trying to acquire some seats in
the civic body. The authorities have directed that all wine shops, country l iquor
shops and permits rooms in the city jurisdiction down their shutters till the
voting process is completed. The step as Section 135C of the Representation of
People's Act, 1951, which provides that no spirituous, fermented or intoxicating
liquors or other substances of a like nature is sold during elections. This is
being done to avoid a law and order problem in the city. |
