Rajapakse re-elected in sixth Lankan presidential election | President Mahinda Rajapakse is in the process of achieving a landslide victory in Sri Lanka's sixth presidential election, which was conducted yesterday.
Results of 112 out of the total 160 electorates show Rajapakse winning 89 seats. He
has been successful in obtaining 4.35 million votes. The percentage is 58.84, SLBC
reported. His main rival and former chief of army staff General (retired) Sarath
Fonseka has managed to win only 23 seats. He received 2.88 million votes, which
is equivalent to 38. 94 of the total votes. It was the President who won the postal
voting in 20 out of the 22 districts. Fonseka won the postal voting in Jaffna
and Batticaloa. The President has secured more than 60 percent of the postal votes
in the districts of Rathnapura, Moneragala, Puttalam, Galle, Hambantota,
Trincomalee,
Matara, Matale, Badulla, Digamadulla, Kalutara, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, Kegalle,
Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Anuradhapura districts. In the Hambantota
district,
he received postal votes exceeding 70 percent. People throughout the country are
celebrating the landslide victory of the President. Some are offering milk rice
even to their rivals and lightning crackers. |
