Delhi unprepared to face any terror attack on Games: Expert | Leading international security consultant Lloyd Bromfield has warned that Delhi Commonwealth Games is not safe
as the city is not adequately prepared for a potential terror attack. Bromfield, who has worked at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics Games, and who will
work at the London Olympics in 2012, said that he is alarmed by New Delhi's lack
of preparation. "The worst-case scenario could be a major bombing. It could be
a Mumbai-style (attack), where you've got a team of Osamas running around with
hand grenades and small arms. It could be anything," The Age quoted Bromfield,
as saying. "I wouldn't suggest it would be an aeroplane into a stadium, but you
have to consider everything because these people have the capability, they have
the intent, the motivation," he added. Bromfield further said that he has discussed
his concerns with colleagues and sports managers, while Australian terror expert
Clive Williams has reportedly described India's approach to security as "a bit
lackadaisical." He also indicated that some of Australia's best athletes could
pull out of the games. "I'm not saying don't go, but instead of listening to the
rhetoric, particularly by the Delhi police and the vested interests - and I include
the Commonwealth Games Federation in that - you can understand why they're
saying
it's safe," Bromfield said. "But someone with some knowledge of the planning
process,
of what needs to happen to have any chance of securing the Games, somebody has
to say something - and I'm one of those individuals," he added. |
