Yet another demand for a separate state comes up | The Vanniyar community in Tamil Nadu on Sunday took to streets and staged a protest in Chennai to splinter the state. Vanniyars, a business-class community, dominates 13 of the 29 districts in the state. Protestors complained that people residing in southern Tamil Nadu are facing lot of problems like water, lack of proper education and unemployment. Protestors accused the government of neglecting the southern part of the state and demanded bifurcation of state along the course of river Kaveri. “South part of Tamil Nadu is being
neglected completely and industrial and housing development is only taking place
in the north part of Tamil Nadu. Most of the people from the south are moving
towards the north for jobs and education,” said C.N. Ramamurthy, Executive President of the Vanniyar Federation. A series of protests for separate states in many parts of the country have been witnessed after New Delhi announced earlier last month that it would carve out the new state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh. Gorkhas,
who are ethnic Nepalese, are demanding separate state of Gorkhaland to be carved
out from West Bengal whereas a demand of separate Vidharba state is echoing in
Maharashtra. |
