Flood-hit farmers protest outside Karnataka Assembly | Flood-hit farmers on Tuesday protested outside Karnataka Assembly, demanding compensation for damaged crops. Upset over not getting the assured compensation, thousand of farmers marched
to Bangalore and tried to lay siege to the state Assembly. The Congress party
has supported the protest. The government of India has also given money, the people
of Karnataka, they have contributed repeatedly for the cause of flood. But even
then this government has not given proper compensation to the farmers. The farmers
are ready to go to jail, they have come here...they are prepared to go to jail
also," said Siddaramaiah Congress leader. Police detained hundreds of agitating
farmers, along with Siddaramaiah. The state government has assured fair compensation
and rehabilitation to farmers whose crops and houses were damaged during the October
floods, but the farmers say they are yet to receive any dues. Raichur, Gulbarga
and Bijapur districts were the worst hit areas when unforeseen floods in October
destroyed millions of acres of crops mostly in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. As
per the official estimates, the floods in the Southern part of the country left
almost 2.5 million people homeless and 250 dead, mostly in the two states. |
