Rana knew about 26/11 attacks in advance: FBI documents | Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, who has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack against a Danish newspaper, also knew in advance about the 26/11 terror strike on Mumbai, the Globe and Mail quoted new FBI documents, as saying. For the first time, FBI
investigators released on Monday partial transcripts of Rana's secretly recorded
conversations as it argued for his continued detention in Chicago . The documents
also reveal some of the information Rana told investigators following his arrest
in October this year. The FBI said the recordings contradict Rana's claims in
court that he is an innocent "dupe" who holds non-violent beliefs akin to those
of Gandhi. "Far from advocating non-violence, Rana's own statements reveal his
support for the brutal killing of 170 people. Rana was told of the attacks before
they happened and offered compliments and congratulations to those who carried
them out afterwards," states the FBI memorandum. Rana faces charges in connection
to an alleged plot to attack a Danish newspaper for publishing cartoon images
of the Prophet Mohammed. The FBI also arrested Rana's close friend, David Headley,
an American who is accused of taking part in the same plot. Headley has since
been charged with additional offences in connection with the 2008 Mumbai bombings.
Rana has not been charged in connection with that attack, but the new documents
filed Monday clearly show the FBI's ongoing investigation of Rana focuses on the
Canadian man's international travel and contacts in the days before the bombings. |
