Buddhists in Ladakh celebrate anniversary of Tibetan saint-scholar Tsongkhapa

Buddhists in Ladakh celebrated the birth and death anniversaries of Tibetan saint-scholar Tsongkhapa, founder of Gelugpa or Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Tsongkhapa, also known as Je Pinpoche of the precious Lord, is one of the most ancient Tibetan saints and is known for his spiritual insight and realization of Buddha's teachings. Tsongkhapa founded the Ganden Monastery and Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism in the 14th century. The Gelugpa tradition later developed as the dominant monastic order in Central Tibet and also spread to Mongolia and the Himalayan region of Ladakh. The anniversary of the saint is celebrated on the 25th day of 10th month of the Tibetan calendar. Monasteries were decorated with lamps and candles in the evening, as monks played drums and trumpets and held fireworks to celebrate the anniversary of the saint. "This day is celebrated in its unique way and on this day all the Buddhists try not to do any wrong to anyone. Besides, the entire region is illuminated with lights to spread a message of world peace," said Tsewang Paljor, Cultural Officer, Jammu and Kashmir Cultural Academy Leh-Ladakh. Ladakh also celebrates Losar (New Year), which begins with the anniversary of Tsongkhapa and ends on the ninth day of the eleventh month of the Tibetan Calendar.
