Ahmedabad hosts a job fair for specially-abled people

In a bid to provide employment opportunities to a marginalized section of society - the specially-abled - a job fair was organized here on Tuesday. Organized by the Blind People's Association and the Vocational Rehabilitation centre, the job fair was attended by scores of specially-abled people and recruiters. The applicants were given personal counselling sessions after which began a long process of recruitment by corporate organizations. Harish Thakur, a visually impaired candidate, who insists that he is as determined and dedicated as normal people, feels that being visually impaired is not an obstacle for him to become financially independent. "One must have heard of a job fair for normal people, but a job fair for the specially-abled has been organized for the first time in Ahmedabad. This is a very good initiative, as specially-abled people get a chance to recognize their skills," said Thakur. According to Bhushan Punani, organizer of the event, the aim of the event was to help specially-abled people lead a normal life. "We know that a job is very important for everyone to make a living. Unless and until a specially-abled person gets a job, I think his education and certificates are useless. So, we want more and more specially-abled people to get a job and we believe that organizing job fairs like these will fetch them more jobs," said Punani. Corporate firms like Scan Infotech, Marketing Unlimited, Safal Infrastructure, System Dynamic and Designate Animation Films partcipted in the event. At the end of the fair, over 300 people secured appointment letters by various companies.
