Demo by visually challenged in Delhi for reservation in state jobs | A group of visually challenged people gathered under the banner of the National Federation of Blind (NFB) to stage a protest demonstration here today, demanding implementation of three percent reservation in state jobs. The Delhi High Court had issued orders to the Indian Government on November 19, 2008
to complete all their backlogs since 1996 and grant three per cent quota on state
jobs to the physically challenged persons. According to Inder Singh, Deputy Chairman,
NFB, the motive behind the demonstration was to receive an assurance from the
concerned ministry about the implementation of the apex courts directives vis-à-vis
the reservation for the physically challenged persons. "Today we have gathered
here to open up all those ears, which are unable to hear the orders by High Court
and the Supreme Court. We want them to hear our pleas and we will not leave this
place until and unless we get an assurance from the concern ministry regarding
the fulfilment of our pleas," Singh said. The demonstrating protestors even alleged
that in the advertisements for Government jobs, they are strictly instructed not
to apply for those jobs. They even tried to break through the gates of a government
building. Although the Central and State Governments have made job reservation
mandatory for the visually challenged persons, bureaucratic delays have denied
them their lawful privilege. |
