Bomb blasts kill seven in Assam as Chidambaram arrives | Seven people were killed and 35 injured in three bomb blasts in Assam’s Nalbari district on Sunday, of which. according to the police, two bombs exploded outside a police station in Nalbari at around 10.30 am.
The serial bomb blasts rocked Assam barely four days before the first anniversary of the
26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai. A third bomb blast took place in Gopal Bazar.
The explosions took place hours before Home Minister P Chidambaram was due to
arrive in the city to review the overall security situation in the state.
No outfit has claimed responsibility for the blasts, but police suspect the involvement of
nine most wanted United Liberation Front of Assom (ULFA) terrorists who have
reportedly sneaked into the country from Myanmar and Bnagladesh.
Assam police insist that the outfit is desperately trying to carry out a few strikes in the
run-up to their protest day on Friday.
They suspect that Sunday’s blasts could be linked to the recent arrest of senior leaders,
including Sasha Choudhury and Chitrabon Hazarika.
The attacks came even as sources within the government revealed that there is plan to
provide safe passage to the ULFA leaderships provided they adjure violence and lay
down arms unconditionally.
