Musharraf funnelling money to aides to improve his image ahead of return: Report | Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has reportedly funnelled a large amount of money to his former aides in the country in order to improve his image, as he is planning a return to the country's political scene.
According to an Asia Times Online report, Musharraf is planning to flaunt a new
political party and has recently "funnelled large sums of money into the coffers
of former aides to promote his cause". "These include former minister of information
Sheikh Rasheed, who ...has been paid $1 million - the same amount that went to
a public relations team to boost Musharraf's image," the report said. The report
also revealed that former general has received millions of dollars in donations
from various corporate biggies and his close associates. "Insiders say that Musharraf
has vast wealth, much of it accumulated through donations from individuals (these,
some say, include Libya's Muammar Qaddafi) and corporations to aid previous election
campaigns. There are reports that Musharraf received 30 million dollars from the
UAE via one of its top bankers, and another 3 million dollars from a Pakistani
cellular phone company," it added. |
