Report regarding Pak sharing nuke info with US 'absurd and plain mischief': General Majid | Pakistan's Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majid has rebuked reports regarding Islamabad sharing information about its nuclear assets with foreign countries ,terming them as 'absurd and plain mischief.' Referring
to investigative journalist Seymour Hersh's report in the latest issue of The
New Yorker magazine that Washington has been negotiating highly sensitive understandings
with the Pakistani Army about the security of the country's nuclear arsenal, General
Majid said no foreign entity is allowed to cross the 'red lines'. "I reiterate
in very unambiguous terms that there is absolutely no question of sharing or allowing
any foreign individual, entity or state any access to sensitive information about
our nuclear assets," The Daily Times quoted General Majid, as saying. "Our engagement
with other countries ... to learn more about international best practices for
security of such assets is based on two clearly spelt out red lines - non intrusiveness
and our right to pick and choose," he added. Commenting on the international community's
concerns over the safety of Pakistan's nuke establishments, General Majid asserted
that country's security forces are capable of countering any step taken against
the nuke installations. "We do not need to negotiate with any other country to
physically augment our security forces, which in any case, we believe, are more
capable than their forces," he said. Hersh, in his report, claimed that during
meetings with current and former officials in Washington and Pakistan, he was
told that the agreements would allow specially trained American units to provide
added security for Pakistani nuclear arsenal in case of a crisis. At the same
time, the Pakistani military would be given money to equip and train Pakistani
soldiers and improve their housing and facilities, says the report. |
