F1 Team McLaren vows to save British Grand Prix | Formula One racing team McLaren has insisted that they would do everything they can to save the British
Grand Prix at Donington Park. Donington Park has a contract to stage the F1 British
Grand Prix for a period of ten years from 2010, however, its future is in doubt
after officials failed to find the 130 million pounds needed to redevelop the
track. Meanwhile, Silverstone is ready to continue hosting the race scheduled
to be held on July 11, but have yet to agree a fee with F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone.
"To lose the British Grand Prix would be massively damaging. It's about the quality
of the fan base. Anyone who goes around the world attending grand prix will tell
you how remarkable it is to walk through the fans' camp sites at Silverstone,"
The Sun quoted Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren boss, as saying. "I am sure McLaren and
all the teams will do everything they can to preserve a British Grand Prix," he
added. The British Racing Drivers' Club, which owns Silverstone, would need to
pay around 12 million pounds for the rights to stage next year's race. |
