WASHINGTON, Feb 19: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton's adversary in the 2016 campaign, has announced his candidature for the 2020 American presidential polls, vowing to defeat Donald Trump, who is "an embarrassment to our country".
Of a progressive ideology, Bernie Sanders,77, had put on the table a lot of
new socialist ideas alien to his countrymen like Medicare for All, free college
education and minimum wage, propelling other democrats also to follow suit. He seeks to launch a campaign for the enactment of his socialist ideas.
"Our campaign is about transforming our country and creating a Government based
on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice," Sanders
said.
In an email to supporters on Tuesday morning, Sanders said, "I think the current
occupant of the White House is an embarrassment to our country... I think he
is a pathological liar... I also think he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe,
a xenophobe, somebody who is gaining cheap political points by trying to pick
on minorities, often undocumented immigrants."
How he will fare among a whole lot of Democratic presidential hopefuls this
time is on debate. He had won 13 m votes and dozens of primaries and caucuses
last time.
He faces a crowd of liberal progressives for Democratic Party's nomination
this time who advocate his own ideas. They include fellow Senators Cory Booker,
Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren. also in the contest will
be Joe Biden and Beto O'Rourke.
mage plummeted by the #MeToo charges against his staff in the last electioneering,
he apologised and recently said, "Every woman in this country who goes to work
today or tomorrow has the right to make sure that she is working in an environment
which is free of harassment, which is safe and is comfortable, and I will do
my best to make that happen."
Although still popular among his partymen, his old age is weighing against
him as a point of disagreement in party circles. Sanders was a House Representative
until 2006 and later was elected to the Senate. Sanders was re-elected in 2012
and 2018.
The primaries and the caucuses to elect the party's nominee will begin in February
next in Iowa.
