UK's Sir John Gurdon, Japan's Shinya Yamanaka win 2012 Nobel Prize for medicine

British scientist Sir John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka of Japan have won the 2012 Nobel Prize for medicine. Both the scientists have managed to transform specialised cells into stem cells, which can become any other type of cell in the body. The prize committee at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute said that the two researchers won the award "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent," the Telegraph reports.

"The discovery has revolutionised our understanding of how cells and organisms develop," the committee added. At present, Sir John is at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge , while Prof Yamanaka is a professor at Kyoto University in Japan . According to the paper, last year, the Nobel Medicine Prize jury was left red faced when it awarded a Canadian scientist, Ralph M Steinman, who unknown to them died three days before the announcement.
