Libyan leader says 10 militias groups disbanded | Libyan leader Mohammed el-Megarif has reportedly said that his government has disbanded about ten militia groups and vowed to continue taking action against Muslim extremists. President el-Megarif, however, did not say when the militias
were disbanded, or how many remain. According to CBS News, el-Megarif said the
attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris
Stevens and three other Americans was the final straw. He echoed the remarks of
his neighbor, Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki, who announced a crackdown on
extremists after they attacked the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia . According to the
report, both the nations face emboldened extremists trying to impose their own,
harsh version of Islamic law. The problem is worse in Libya because many are armed
with weapons they used to bring down former ruler Muammar Gaddafi last year, the
report said.
