Bars on visitors from meeting Osama doc Afridi | Officials have barred visitors from meeting the Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, at the Peshawar Central jail, who had helped the US' Central Intelligence Agency track down Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden. The Express Tribune
quoted Dr Afridi's brother Jamil Afridi, as saying that he and advocate Qamar
Nadeem Afridi were denied a meeting with the doctor when they went to visit him
on Wednesday. Officials informed them that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had
barred anyone from meeting Dr Afridi. Jamil said that his family was expecting
the government to take such measures following his brother's alleged interview
with Fox News. The ban bars anyone, including relatives from meeting the controversial
doctor, who was accused of spying for the CIA to capture Osama in Abbottabad.
Dr Afridi was accused of carrying out a fake anti-polio vaccination programme
in the area in order to get DNA samples of Osama's family members living in the
Abbottabad compound, where he was killed by Navy SEALs on May 2011. He has stoutly
negated all allegations against him and termed the case a fabrication of the Inter-Services
Intelligence. The doctor's family has met him four times since his arrest in May
2011. His two sisters had earlier met him for the first time in August this year.
