Armada of Chinese ships leaves disputed Senkaku region in East China Sea

Chinese ships have left the Senkaku islands for the first time in about a week, Japan Coast Guard said, a sign that the spat over the dispute territory has started to ease. Although the coast guard spotted nine Chinese fishery patrol boats close to the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea on Sunday evening, they were all outside the contiguous zone, which serves as a buffer for Japan ’s territorial waters. A total of 20 Chinese patrol vessels had entered Japan ’s territorial waters or the contiguous zone around the uninhabited islands since last Tuesday, according to the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters based in Naha , Okinawa Prefecture . According to Japan Times, China has been maintaining a more visible presence near the five islands since the Japanese Government bought three of the islands from a private Japanese owner to put them under state control. The purchase triggered protests in many Chinese cities, several of them violent, and prompted senior Chinese officials to make critical remarks about Japan, the report said.
