Sanchi fortified ahead of Lankan President Rajapaksa's visit

A day before Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit here, security in the town of Sanchi has been tightened to avoid any untoward incident. The state government has deployed additional security personnel in the town. Security personnel were seen stopping people entering the town and frisking passengers and vehicles at police check posts. Rajapaksa is slated to inaugurate a Buddhist institution here on Friday in the presence of several other foreign dignitaries and State guests. The Sri Lankan President arrived in New Delhi on a three-day state visit to the country on Wednesday. Rajapaksa's visit has invited the wrath of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party that has warned to lead protests in Madhya Pradesh in opposition to the Sri Lankan President's visit. Earlier on Wednesday, MDMK party leader Vaiko Gopalaswamy and hundreds of his supporters aiming to show black flags to the visiting Sri Lankan President were stopped from entering the state by the state government. Government authorities blocked Vaiko and his 500 odd-supporters at Chhindwara district, the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra . Earlier as well, Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chauhan had requested Vaiko to drop the protest move, while insisting that the visit was apolitical and that it should be seen as an endeavour to promote peace and harmony among South Asian countries.
