Vaiko to go ahead with protest against Sri Lankan President's visit

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko will go ahead with his planned demonstration against Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse during his proposed visit to Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. Vaiko said he had written a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan urging him not to invite Rajapaksa. "A very disheartening news at this point for us is the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse who was responsible for the genocide of the Tamils is coming to India . He is coming to Madhya Pradesh for the inauguration of a Buddhist institution," said Vaiko. "As the central and the state governments have made arrangements for his visit, I wrote to the Madhya Pradesh Government protesting against his visit. I wrote to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan opposing this visit," he added. Vaiko further said the protest would be a peaceful one. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister had earlier written to Vaiko, and asked him to drop the protest move. Chouhan had in his letter insisted that Rajapakse's visit was apolitical and that it should be seen as an endeavor to promote peace and harmony among the Asian nations. The MDMK leader, who is a strong critic of Rajapakse, holds him responsible for the killing of civilian Tamils in the war against LTTE in 2009.
