After sex scandal, US Air Force has woman as new training commander | The United States Air Force has posted a woman to lead its basic training unit after
dozens of female recruits alleged that they were sexually assaulted or harassed
by male instructors in the past year. The Air Force announced Saturday that Col.
Deborah Liddick will take command of the 737th Training Group at Lackland Air
Force Base in San Antonio next week. Liddick's appointment comes amid a sex scandal
that has rocked one of the nation's busiest military training centers and caught
the attention of Congress. Earlier, the U.S. Air Force launched an investigation
into instructor misconduct after a top training commander at a Texas base, Luis
A. Walker, was accused 13 months ago of having illicit sexual contact with 10
female recruits. On July 21, Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his
role in the scandal. The scandal has been learnt to grow since 2009, involving
15 training instructors, with 38 trainees identified as victims of the scandal.
Six other male instructors have also been charged with crimes ranging from rape
to adultery, the report said. Liddick is already stationed in San Antonio , where
she serves as chief of the maintenance division at the former Randolph Air Force Base. She is scheduled to take command Friday, it added. |
