Neil Armstrong buried in Atlantic | American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, who was the first person to walk on the Moon, has been buried in the Atlantic Ocean with full military honours. The ashes of the 'reluctant'
icon of the 1960s Space Race were transported on the guided missile cruiser USS
Philippine Sea. The legendary astronaut was born on August 5, 1930, near Wapakoneta
, Ohio . He was an officer in the U.S. Navy and had served in the Korean War before
joining NASA. "He embodied all that is good and all that is great about America
. Neil, wherever you are, you again have shown us a way to the stars," the Daily
Mail quoted Eugene Cernan, who was the last man to step on the moon as the commander
of the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, as saying. Before his burial, Armstrong was honored
in a memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral on September 13, 2012.
Armstrong, who died on August 25 following complications from a heart surgery,
had earlier made it clear that he wished to be buried at sea, the paper said.
The Apollo 11 mission, when Armstrong first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969,
was his last space flight, it added. |
