Apex Court refuses to impose stay on fuel loading at Kudankulam nuclear plant | Even as anti-nuclear activists are demanding the immediate suspension of fuel loading at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to put a stay on the loading. Briefing mediapersons, senior counsel Prashant Bhushan, who had filed a plea in the Supreme Court demanding a stay on fuel loading, said, “The court asked the government whether these 17 recommendations (of AERB) have been made, and whether they have been complied with or not. The government said that these are only additional recommendations by way of abundant caution. They said safety aspects have been dealt with other judgement related to environmental clearance of the project. Since that is a much longer judgement, the court wanted to go through it.” The apex court will now hear the plea next Thursday. Informing that the plant will take a minimum of two months to be fully operational after fuel loading, Bhushan said. “The Solicitor General appearing for plant operator MPCIL said that it will take a minimum of two more months from the loading of fuel for the plant to become operational. So the court did not feel the need to pass an interim order.” “We do not see it as a setback,” Bhushan added. Earlier in the day, villagers and activists protesting against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant formed a human chain in the sea off Idianthakarai coast to step up their agitation. |
