Anti-nuke protests form human chain in sea | The villagers and activists who are protesting against the
Kudankulam nuclear power plant have formed a human chain in the sea off Idianthakarai coast to step up their agitation. The protestors comprised mostly of women and children.
The People's Movement of Nuclear Energy (PMANE), which is spearheading the stir, said
the agitators have put forward four demands - stoppage of the process of fuel-loading in
KNPP, giving up of the plan to arrest anti-nuclear movement leaders, adequate compensation
for those who suffered losses and release of those already taken into custody.
The agitators on Wednesday ended their 48-hour relay fast at Idinthakarai to protest the
police action which saw them resorting to baton charge and firing of teargas shells, besides
conducting house-to-house searches. Security forces on Wednesday sealed almost the entire
town housing the nuclear plant even as PMANE covenor S.P. Udayakumar remained elusive
after reneging on his offer to court arrest. Also, the Supreme Court is expected to hear lawyer
Prashant Bhushan's plea for an immediate stay on the plant's operation later on Thursday. |
