PML(Q) hopes for breakthrough in Indo-Pak ties

Ahead of the bilateral talks between India's External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Secretary General Mushahid Hussain on Friday said his party has been very positive towards the peace process and was looking to a breakthrough by the leadership of the two sides, having the capacity to take bold decisions for the welfare of humanity. "We are looking for a breakthrough by the leadership, which has a nixonion vision, which has the capacity to take bold decisions, tough decisions, which will shape the future of one-fifth of humanity that lives here," he said. Emphasizing that the Indo-Pak peace process should be based on reciprocity, Hussain said: "It should not be one-sided, and India should show a big heart to move forward. We are looking for resolving issues like Kashmir, Siachen. Hundreds of Pakistani soldiers were killed, martyred; so why can't we have humane solution to Siachen." "There has to be large heartedness. Why can't the Indian cricket team come here? Why can't Dr. Manmohan Singh come to Pakistan? What is stopping him?" he asked. Hussain said both Asian neighbours should move beyond the blame game. "We did not create the Maoist insurgency. We didn't support Anna Hazare. We didn't create the floods in India. Let's resolve issues through dialogue and discussion, starting with Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek and all other issues, which are relevant for the future of one-fifth of humanity, which resides in South Asia," he added. When asked to comment on India's observation that nothing concrete had come from Pakistan on the issue of terrorism, Hussain said: "The ball is in the court of India because, we have gone the extra mile, we have shown the flexibility. And, we have told the Foreign Minister, his excellency S.M. Krishna, there is no constituency in Pakistan that seeks confrontation with India." Meanwhile, senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar said there is a need to make common mechanisms to fight the enemy. "We have to give a chance to the people. As long as there is no ownership of the people, this cannot happen. That is why we feel that people-to-people contact is important in building trust. Otherwise, one incident can shatter that trust. So, to fight the common enemy, we have to make common mechanisms," he said. Sattar further said anti-terrorism laws are being strengthened in Pakistan. " We are also strengthening 'watch and ward' mechanisms in our communities, so that this curse can be combatted. We want the people of India to think well about the people of Pakistan, and also the people Pakistan should be with India in a crisis, like they were during the terrible Mumbai 2008 attacks. I think that this talk of mistrust is more in the media," he added. Krishna is scheduled to hold formal talks with Khar on Saturday. Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan met earlier in the day to fine tune the agenda for Saturday's ministerial bilateral talks. Foreign Secretaries Ranjan Mathai and Jalil Abbas Jilani took stock of the progress made in bilateral ties and also charted the course to be taken for the next round of talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
