CBI registers cases relating to NRHM irregularities in Uttar Pradesh

      The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered three more cases in connection with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) financial irregularities in Uttar Pradesh. The CBI had earlier registered five preliminary enquiries on the orders of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. The high court order was issued on November 15, 2011. The CBI said searches were carried out at six places at Lucknow , Ghaziabad , Agra and in Vapi, Gujarat . The first case relates to the purchase of huge quantities of medicines tablet Leomizole worth Rs.2.47 crore. The second case was registered against district health officials of Lucknow and a private firm for illegally siphoning off Rs.12.5 lakhs, which were originally meant for up-gradation of a hospital. The third case was registered against a person for submitting fraudulent receipts of a huge amount in the name of a state public sector undertaking. CBI had earlier registered 14 cases so far involving irregularities in the utilization of NRHM Funds allocated to Uttar Pradesh. During the course of investigation, in these cases till date, CBI had conducted searches at 183 places at residence and office premises of various public servants and private persons/ beneficiary firms. Till date, the CBI has examined more than 1700 witnesses and collected over 8000 documents (running in more than 50,000 pages). Further, a sum of Rs.1.6 crores in cash has been seized and Rs.14.80 crores has been frozen in various bank accounts of accused / suspect persons. In four cases, a charge sheet has been filed against two firms and 20 persons including the then Minister of Family Welfare & MLA, of UP.
