Lok Sabha adjourned after Coalgate uproar | The Lok Sabha has been adjourned
till Monday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to press for Prime Minister
Dr. Manmohan Singh's resignation over the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG)
report on coal block allocations. As the two Houses met for the day, the opposition
members trooped into the well raising slogans against the government demanding
the Prime Minister's resignation on the issue. This led to adjournment of the
Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha earlier till noon. When the Houses re-assembled
after the adjournment, there was no change in the atmosphere and the Lok Sabha
was adjourned till Monday and the Rajya Sabha till 2.30 pm. The BJP has held the
Prime Minister, who then held direct charge of the Coal Ministry, responsible
for what has been estimated as loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crores by the CAG in coal
block allocation and demanded his resignation. The CAG report on coal block allocation
states that nearly 150 coalfields were allotted to private and state-run firms
without transparency and objectivity between 2005 and 2009.
