Mamata welcomes Supreme Court's stay order in Singur land case |
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday welcomed the Supreme
Court's stay
order on the 2006 land acquisition for setting up industry in Singur. "I am very
happy that the Supreme Court gave this order. I am giving two thousand rupees
per month to Singur agricultural labourers, landless labourers and farmers," she
said. "We are also giving two kilos of rice at the rate of Rs. two per kilo. They
are happy. I want them to get their land back. The landless labourers must also
get their compensation," she added. In a relief to the West Bengal Government,
the apex court today stayed the Calcutta High Court's order on the 2006 land acquisition
for setting up an industry in Singur. A bench of Justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad,
said that the Calcutta High Court's interim order which had stated that the state
need not part with the land for two months to allow it file its appeal, would
continue. "In respect of the Singur matter, the judgment of the Calcutta High
Court, whereby the Calcutta High Court held that the Singur Act was ultra-virus,
that judgement has been stayed by the Supreme Court today," said the counsel of
West Bengal government, Kalyan Banerjee. "Tata has been asked only to file the
additional documents. The matter is expected to be taken up after four weeks.
Stay has been granted and notice has been issued," added Banerjee. The West Bengal
government had moved the apex court against the high court order, which had struck
down the Singur Land Acquisition Act that allowed the state government to reclaim
400 acres of land given to Tata Motors.
