Indian origin pathologist struck off UK medical register |
An Indian origin pathologist, who bungled the post-mortem report of a man who died
in 2009’s G-20 protests in London , has been struck off the United Kingdom 's medical
register.
Dr. Freddy Patel has been banned from practising as a doctor, despite being investigated
numerous times and suspended on two previous occasions by medical watchdogs over
his careless work a decade back. According to the Daily Express, Dr. Patel was
found guilty of misconduct, but was not at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal
Service (MPTS) sitting in Manchester . He practised as a pathologist for 35 years,
after qualifying at the University of Zambia in 1974, the report said. According
to the report, the MPTS said Dr. Patel’s actions were found to be misleading,
dishonest and liable to bring his profession into disrepute over parts of his
handling of the post-mortem of Ian Tomlinson. The Reverend Robert Lloyd-Richards,
chairman of the tribunal panel, told Dr. Patel he had an ‘unwarranted confidence’
in his own ability, ‘a deep-seated attitudinal problem’ and also ‘lacked insight’.
Tomlinson, 47, died in April 2009 after he was caught up in the G20 riot in the
City of London and was forcibly pushed over by a police officer. Dr. Patel concluded
he died from a heart attack. Further medical reports suggested that he had died
from an injury to his liver that caused internal bleeding and a cardiac arrest,
the report said. After an examination into Tomlinson’s death, Dr. Patel’s conclusion
was discredited by the jury in favour of experts who said he died of internal
bleeding, the report added.
