Advani: Govt only has foreign investment in mind | Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani
on Thursday launched a fresh attack on the Central Government over the Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI) in retail, saying the ruling government only has foreign
investment in mind despite the political crisis. Advani asked if the government
was going to look only at the development of cities by furthering the interests
of urban industrialists. "FDI in retail is against the growth of the country,
we will not support it. Every single individual in the country knows it very well
that the system will not function without small retailers," said Advani. "When
the government brought this proposal in Parliament a few years ago, everybody
had opposed it . The government then said that the Prime Minister would talk to
all including the stakeholders before a decision on FDI in retail is taken. They
have not talked to anybody so far," he added. Advani further alleged that the
Congress-led UPA Government has become arrogant after coming to power. "I think
that this government has become arrogant after coming to power," he said. Amid
reports that the government is mulling notifying FDI in retail, the BJP today
organized a protest demonstration by traders from across the country here to oppose
the move. The entire BJP top rung including party chief Nitin Gadkari, leader
of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh, Murli Manohar Joshi,
Vijay Goel, among others, participated in the protest. The government had proposed
to allow the 450 billion dollars supermarket sector to foreign firms such as Wal-Mart,
but had suspended the decision to allow such investment in multi-brand retailing
due to opposition from several parties, including some UPA allies.
