Pak Govt files review petition against SC decision against Contempt Law | The Pakistan Government has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Contempt of Court Act 2012 (COCA). On August 3, a five-member
bench, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, declared COCA "null and void"- a clear declaration that the court has the right to hold anyone in contempt,
regardless of their office, reports The Express Tribune. Following the court's
verdict, President Asif Ali Zardari met with his legal experts to discuss options
to save his second prime minister from being dismissed, as there is no legal immunity
for him in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case. Zardari
had also met with Law Minister Farooq H Naek and held a detailed discussion with
him. The government has already seen one of its premiers being disqualified on
contempt charges after he refused to follow court orders, which directed him to
write to Swiss authorities requesting to reopen graft cases against Zardari. A
similar fate hangs over Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, who has also so far
avoided writing the letter. |
