Sadananda Gowda meets Advani; decision on leadership crisis on Sunday | The decision over the ongoing political impasse in Karnataka has been deferred till
Sunday, with the highly anticipated meeting between the beleaguered chief
minister Sadananda Gowda and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) senior leadership
failing to come to a conclusion. Addressing mediapersons after the meeting here
on Saturday, senior party member Arun Jaitley cited the absence of party president
Nitin Gadkari as the reason for the deferment. Jaitley informed that Gowda, along
with Karnataka Finance Minister Suresh Kumar had a “detailed discussion” with
L.K. Advani and the decisions taken by the core group and party’s parliamentary
board shall be discussed with Gadkari, who will be back later tonight. Gowda will
meet Gadkari early morning on Sunday, Jaitley said. Earlier in the day, Gowda
had said that he was prepared to accept the BJP central leadership’s decision.
“I am prepared to accept whatever decision is taken by BJP central leadership.
I am ready to quit if my party high command tells me to,” he told media here.
The BJP core group, which met here earlier in the day decided to replace Gowda
with Jagdish Shettar as Karnataka Chief Minister. Shettar, who is the rural development
minister, is the choice for the top post of former Karnataka chief minister B.S
Yeddyurappa, who is calling the shots in Karnataka BJP even after his unceremonious
exit as chief minister last year. He will be the third BJP chief minister in the
state in four years since the party came to power there in 2008. The meeting was
also attended by Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and Ananth Kumar.
