US plan to expand presence in Pakistan enhancing anti-America feeling: NYT |
With the Obama Administration pushing the Pakistan government to
take more steps against the Taliban amid reports that the top commanders of the
banned outfit have taken refuge in Quetta near the Afghan border, anti-US sentiment
in Pakistan is rising. The United States is trying hard to reduce the anti-American
feeling with the approval of an aid package of 1.5 billion dollars a year for
the next five years, however, the terms and conditions attached with the aid are
being seen as an insult by the Pakistanis and they believe that it impedes the
nation's sovereignty. The massive expansion of the US embassy in Islamabad and
reports regarding the US ' plans to send 1000 more Marines to Pakistan has further
aggravated the issue. The United States Embassy has publicized plans for a vast
new building in Islamabad for about 1,000 people, with security for some diplomats
provided through a Washington-based private contracting company, DynCorp. The
Pakistani military and the intelligence agencies are concerned that DynCorp is
being used by Washington to develop a parallel network of security and intelligence
personnel within Pakistan , The New York Times quoted officials and politicians
close to the army, as saying. |
