Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday said the NCERT had already constituted a committee on May 14 under the chairmanship of Prof SK Thorat, Chairman, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) to review the classes IX - XII Social Science/Political Science textbooks of NCERT from the point of view of identifying educationally inappropriate material in them and to provide suggestions for alternatives to be placed in the textbooks. Sibal in a statement issued said this issue is also being examined by the committee as a part of the exercise undertaken by the committee, and added that the committee is likely to submit its report shortly. There have been certain news items in the media regarding statements by leaders from Tamil Nadu in connection with a cartoon on anti-Hindi movement in the NCERT textbooks.
