Samajwadi Party downplays Mulayam, Jaswant meeting | Samajwadi Party (SP) leader
Shahid Siddiqui on Tuesday played down the meeting between his party chief Mulayam
Singh Yadav and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh, saying it would
be something personal. "I don't know why Jaswant Singhji came. He is a very respected
leader and we do not see him, just as a BJP leader, he is a very senior leader.
I consider him a secular leader and if he came to meet Mulayam Singh ji then may
be it would be something personal. I don't see any politics behind it," said Siddiqui.
"Leaders like Jaswant Singhji have become so big in stature that you cannot measure
him from the party's point of view. He is above party now and has become a national
leader. All parties should respect leaders like him. I also respect Jaswant Singhji,"
he added. Jaswant Singh met Mulayam earlier in the day amid speculation that the
BJP leader could be lobbying for himself as a candidate for the Vice President's
post. Jaswant Singh met Mulayam at his residence here during the latter's meeting
with yoga guru Ramdev at his residence on the issue of black money. Singh, who
met Mulayam for around ten minutes, was later seen talking one-on-one for some
time. The ruling Congress Party and the opposition BJP have so far not disclosed
the cards on their respective choices for presidential and vice presidential election
candidates. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil's term ends on July 25 this year,
while Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari's term is going to end in August this
year.
