Sikh bodies honour Beant Singh killer Rajoana’s sister

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) felicitated the sister of Balwant Singh Rajoana, the assassin of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh on the twenty-eighth anniversary of the Operation Blue Star of 1984, here on Wednesday. The supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, Akal Takth, also expressed solidarity with Rajoana and dubbed him a 'living martyr', besides presenting a saffron holy robe to his sister, Kamaldeep Kaur. Interacting with reporters, former SGPC head, Avtar Singh Makkar blamed the Central government for failing to punish those guilty for the 1984 religious attack. "When in 1984 our religious place was attacked and hundreds of us were mercilessly killed, no one uttered a word. People like Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler were made ministers and lawmakers. The Central government failed to take any action. Our government indulges in double standards and justice has been denied over the years," Makkar said. Beant Singh was assassinated in a car bomb on August 31, 1995 in Chandigarh . Eleven others, including three members of Singh's security staff were also killed. Separatist group Babbar Khalsa had then claimed responsibility for the assassination, but security authorities were reported to be doubtful of the truth of that claim. Beant Singh was credited to restore normalcy in Punjab in 1992 after suppressing separatist groups and their activities.
