KKR's victory celebrations end with police baton-charge outside Kolkata's Eden Gardens | Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) grand victory celebrations took a turn
for the worse on Tuesday when police baton charged fans outside the Eden Gardens
stadium, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee felicitated the Indian
Premier League (IPL)-winning team. Television reports said police were forced
to baton charge fans after they broke through barricades to enter the stadium.
Nearly 30,000 people were waiting outside the stadium. The surging crowd made
a determined bid to catch a glimpse of the KKR team and their owners Shahrukh
Khan and Juhi Chawla. Several people were injured in the chaotic melee. The area
was littered with footwear. Earlier, West Bengal Governor M.K Narayanan, Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee and members of her cabinet welcomed the team with bouquets,
garlands and sweets on a makeshift stage. Lauding the KKR side for winning the
fifth edition of the IPL, Banerjee said: "The name of the team Kolkata Knight
Riders (KKR) is connected with Kolkata. We the people of West Bengal welcome all
the winning players of KKR in the city." West Bengal Sports and Transport Minister
Madan Mitra said that the victory of KKR would boost the morale of the people
in the state. "Yes, certainly, not only it will inspire the people, it will inspire
the brand. It will inspire the morale of the state. Earlier, the slogan was 'What
Bengal Thinks Today, India Thinks Tomorrow' but now today, the slogan is 'What
Kolkata Thinks Today, Everybody Thinks Tomorrow'," said Mitra. KKR defeated Chennai
Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets Sunday to lift their maiden IPL title.
