Obama’s mother Ann Dunham’s Indonesian batik collection | Barack Obama’s mother Ann Dunham’s Indonesian batik collection will be showcased at a private collection in Malaysia. The collection will be exhibited at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia from June 8 – the first time outside of the United States. The “Ann Dunham’s Legacy – A
Collection of Indonesian Batik” project is the brainchild of US embassy cultural affairs officer Anita Ghildyal. Ghildyal was delighted when Obama’s half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng gave the green light. “The collection is so sought after because
it’s a time capsule from the 70s, when batik was daily wear. And it has been beautifully preserved,” the Star online quoted Ghildyal as saying. Ann Dunham, who died of
cancer in 1995, was known for more than just being an activist and social scientist who did her doctoral field work in anthropology in Indonesia. She also helped
to install a microfinance programme there for small business owners. |
