Charles and Camilla become Britain’s 1st choice to become king and queen

A new poll reveals that the majority of Britons now want Prince Charles and his wife Camilla on the throne. The heir to the throne has overtaken son William for the first time in a decade after a surge in popularity for him and his wife. Camilla has defied the odds to win the hearts of Britons since she wed Charles in 2005. Royal watchers had warned that the public would never accept her as their queen, because of her part in the break-up of the 63-year-old Prince’s first marriage to Diana. There had been mounting calls to skip a generation and let 29-year-old William take the throne ahead of his dad, and experts had predicted that the “Kate effect” would strengthen the young Prince’s place as the people’s choice. But the Ipsos MORI poll, which was conducted to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee reveals that Britain is now ready to accept Queen Camilla, the Sun reported. More than half the population want Charles, 63, to succeed his mother. The public has forgiven him, 16 years after his image was tarnished by his divorce from Diana. Britons are also warming to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who is quietly grafting for good causes and acting as a mentor to Kate. “Camilla has worked really hard since she married Charles. She has been beavering away quietly for charities behind the scenes and there is no doubt the public have warmed to her,” Tory MP Mary MacLeod, a former policy adviser to the Queen, said. The poll shows 51 per cent believe he should be crowned, compared with 40 per cent who favour William. Almost every age group wants Charles to be king, but his biggest support is with 45 to 54-year-olds, among whom he is first choice to 60 per cent, with 30 per for William. Only the youngest group surveyed, 18 to 24-year-olds, prefer William, by a margin of 57 to 36 per cent.
