110 students from Assam make it to IIT list | This year 110 students from Assam qualified for entrance to the
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), suggesting improving standards of education
in the state and the increasing interest of youth in the field of research and
development. A total of 110 students, out of 6654 candidates who appeared for
the exams from Assam, made it to the merit list. Budheshwar Gogoi, from Bokajan
town in Karbi Anglong district of Assam, is one such student. Hs said that he
devoted two years to clear the highly competitive examination. “Hard work is the
key to success and I believe that whatever we learn in our books, we should implement
it practically,” Gogoi said. His father, Someswar Gogoi said: “I want my son to
be an engineer. He should be able to create new gadgets or research a new theory.”
A total of 62,159 candidates registered for IIT from Guwahati zone, of which 1,280
made it to the rank list. Among these, there are 13 students from the Utkarsh
Superb 30, an initiative that provides free coaching to underprivileged students
from the region. Oil India , the state owned company, sponsored their education
and living expenses during the preparations. Earlier, they only had a centre in
Guwahati, but now they have started one in Jorhat too. Navajyoti Dutta, a student,
said: “Outside coaching is very expensive and some parents cannot afford to send
their children but here we are getting free coaching which is very helpful for
the parents as well for us so for talented youth can become a successful one from
this institute.” Pravin Singh, a meritorious student, said: “We are 30 students
here and we stay together. We study and discuss all our problems together. Our
faculty is very helpful and we are thankful to them.” Another 1099 students from
other states of Northeast also took the exam, out of which eight have qualified.
Indian Institute of Technology is the premier institution for technical studies
in the country and it conducts one of the toughest exams. This year over five
lakh students appeared for the examination to study in 15 IITs spread across the
country. |
