Medvedev elected leader of Russia's ruling party | Russia's ruling United Russia party elected Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as its new leader on Saturday. Former leader of the United Russia and incumbent President Vladimir
Putin led the party from 2008 to 2012, but he never formally joined the party.
In late April, Putin said that he would quit as chairman of the United Russia
party and nominated Medvedev as its new leader. He noted that although the Russian
constitution does not prohibit the president from being a party member, the spirit
is that the president is a consolidating figure for all political forces and for
all citizens. Medvedev, the former president, accepted Putin's appointment and
joined the party on Tuesday.
