Manmohan Singh to visit Myanmar to boost bilateral ties | Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
will pay an official goodwill visit to Myanmar next week to boost bilateral ties,
said the Myanmar Government in an official announcement Thursday without giving
the exact dates of his visit. Singh is expected to arrive in Myanmar capital Nay
Pyi Taw on May 27 as disclosed by the Indian official sources. During his three-day
visit in Myanmar , Singh will hold discussions with Myanmar President U Thein
Sein and some bilateral agreements are expected to be signed. Singh is also expected
to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, parliament member and leader of the National League
for Democracy (NLD), in Yangon before he wound up his visit. Myanmar President
U Thein Sein visited India in October last year, during which he had talks with
Singh on bilateral relations, reiterating their shared commitment to strengthening
and broadening the multifaceted relationship and to take it to a new level. Thein
Sein's India visit also produced a memorandum of understanding on upgradation
of the Yangon Children's Hospital and Sittway General Hospital and on a program
of cooperation in science and technology for the period of 2012-15. India is actively
involved in over a dozen projects in Myanmar , both in infrastructural and non-infrastructural
areas. These include upgradation and resurfacing of the 160-kilometer long Tamu-Kalewa-Kalemyo
road, construction and upgradation of the Rhi- Tiddim Road in Myanmar and the
Kaladan Multimodal Transport Project.
