Singur farmers await compensation from Mamata Govt | (West Bengal): Over a year since the regime change in West Bengal , farmers
here are still awaiting compensation for land, acquired for a car plant of Tata
Motors, which was later aborted. A majority of the farmers are living on pension,
but concrete financial help from the government is still awaited. One farmer,
Manindra Ghosh, said he is yet to receive his land back officially from the government.
"I have not given away the plot of land that I have left. I had kept a lot of
hope on Mamata, and so, I have still kept my land. I just receive some amount
from the farmers' pension," he said. Very few people in the area have benefited
from government initiatives like providing shops to farmers under the 'Kisan Vision
Store' scheme, due to the slow bureaucratic process. Opposition leaders have started
questioning the state government’s proposed Land Acquisition Bill. "The way Mamata
Banerjee has given relaxation to the Ceiling Act, it will lead to the same Zamindari
and Jotedari policies in the near future," said Samik Kanti Ghosh, a Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) leader.
