Neil Armstrong’s 1967 Chevrolet Corvette up for grabs | A 1967 Chevrolet Corvette, which was once owned by legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong, has been up for auction
on eBay with the bidding already topping 250,000 dollars. The blue coupe remained
locked in a garage for more than 20 years before being purchased by its current
owner this February. While the three-owner car once driven by the first man to
walk on the surface of the moon is now barely running, most of its parts are original.
According to Fox News, aside from a new carburetor, water pump, muffler and wheels,
the only major modification is a set of botched fender flares, the Daily Mail
reported. The fully-documented Corvette, complete with Neil Armstrong’s information,
has the original 427-cubic-inch, 390-hp L36 V8 engine. It also features factory
air conditioning and power windows. The odometer shows just 38,148 miles, but
as it only has five digits and has not been used since the 1970s, the real mileage
could be higher. According to the seller, the Corvette was delivered to Armstrong
in December of 1966 as part of a special program run by Melbourne Chevrolet dealer
Jim Rathman. In a ploy to boost sales, Rathman would offer astronauts a special
one-year lease deal on Corvettes so they would always be seen behind the wheel
of the latest model. After Armstrong traded in his Corvette a year later, it was
purchased by a NASA employee who used it on the road until September of 1981,
when he decided to store it away, website Autoevolution revealed. The auction
for Armstrong’s car on eBay ends on May 6, and as of Friday evening, the bidding
is hovering around 250,000 dollars, with 72 bids already on the table.
