Blind Chinese dissident Chen pleads for seat on Clinton's plane to flee China | Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, who recently took refuge in the US Embassy in Beijing after his escape from house
arrest, has pleaded to be allowed to leave Beijing on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's plane, who is currently in China for bilateral talks. According to The
Telegraph, the US is under intense pressure to help Guangcheng flee China . Speaking
from his hospital bed, Chen said that he no longer felt safe and wanted to leave
the country after knowing his wife was in police custody since two days and has
been 'nearly beaten to death'. Chen Guangcheng reportedly left the protection
of the US Embassy in Beijing after agreeing to a deal that called to reunite him
with his family, with American officials having pledged to monitor his safety.
However, Robert Wang, the deputy chief of mission, was denied a chance to meet
Chen in hospital, prompting concerns that the US has lost control over his fate.
Clinton is facing calls to do 'everything' in her power to rescue Chen and his
family and grant them asylum in America . Speaking at the opening of the summit
in Beijing , Clinton did not mention Chen's case, saying that the US would raise
'the importance of human rights and fundamental freedoms'. Gary Locke, the US
Ambassador to China , has repeatedly refused to say whether Chen and his family
would be offered political asylum in America . Locke also has doubts on whether
Chen could leave with the Secretary of State, saying that the activist had also
made unrealistic demands to meet with Wen Jiabao, the Chinese
premier.
