Delhi civic polls: BJP celebrates as results emerge | Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra on Tuesday described the party’s victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls as a verdict
against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Speaking to mediapersons, Malhotra said:
“It is a verdict against Sheila Dikshit and due to anti-incumbency. It is a verdict
against corruption and price rise.” Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah
Naidu hailed the party’s win and attributed the party’s success to good governance
provided by the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). “There are three
reasons for the victory of the BJP in these elections. Number one, the good governance
given by the BJP in the MCD. Number two is the horrible corruption by the Congress
Party - the number of scams. Number three is price rise,” Naidu told reporters
here. Meanwhile, the Congress Party, accepting the defeat, said they respected
the people’s mandate. “The verdict is against our expectations, but we respect
the people’s mandate. Last time (2007), the BJP won the MCD polls, but after that
the Congress Party won the assembly elections and all seven seats of Parliament.
The MCD elections should be viewed as MCD elections only,” said Congress Party
spokesperson Rashid Alvi. The counting of votes for 272 wards spread in three
civic bodies -- east, south and north – was still on at 33 centres across New
Delhi at the time of filing of this report. Television channels reported BJP leading
in all the three corporations- 61 wards in north, 50 seats in south and at 34
wards in East.
