South Korea's ruling party wins parliamentary polls | South Korea's ruling Saenuri party has won a majority of
seats in the parliamentary elections. Saenuri (New Frontier Party) won 152 in the 300-seat national assembly, which was 25 more than the opposition Democratic
United Party (DUP) that had earlier been tipped to win the election. The vote
is being seen as a key test for the leader ahead of presidential elections in
December, The BBC reports. According to election officials, turnout was 54.3 percent
compared to 46.1 percent four years ago. In a statement, President Lee Myung-bak
said people had made 'wise choices'. According to the report, a win for the pro-business
ruling party will come as a bost for its leader and presumed presidential candidate
Park Geun-hye. This is the first time in 20 years that the country's parliamentary
and presidential elections have fallen in the same year.
